HOME SMOKE SIGNALS HAPPY TRAILS TRIBAL NEWS
Welcome to Smoke Signals!

Go ahead and light up someone's life by sending out a message of remembrance. Tell us what you remember best about your years with the RBB!

Was it the heat—and we DO mean the heat—of freshman summer band? Or was it the chill and the thrill of UIL! Favorite Freshmen! Ponderosa! Called up in the hall! Apache! The Concert on the Steps in D.C.! Fight Song! Band Boosters! Old Lang Syne! Greensleeves! Sweepstakes! The Mad Major! That BIG White Number One on your nose! Proud Mary! Marching Through the Halls! Drum Cadence! Green Onions! THUNDERATION! Or maybe it was just "Band Dismissed!"

What ever comes to mind, let's hear about it so that we can all take a minute to relate to a moment that was important to many more of us too.

Mind those left flanks and right cross-overs though. And go easy on the senior who made your life miserable, mostly because there's probably a freshman of yours who'll let you have it too.

Let the memories begin!

I remember that day Susan! Poor Linda was not too happy. And now that you mention it, it's surprising to see that you're still with us. The Boles girls were fierce seniors. But to tell the truth they were largely fair, and I know our trombone rank benefited greatly when baritone totin' Linda took over our seniorless right guide position.

I recall that Byron Thornton and I use to enjoy playing dixieland music together. Byron played the trombone and I played the tuba. We developed a pretty good style of playing. Even Mr. Kunkel seemed to enjoy hearing us play from time to time. In fact, we were once asked to play before the Lion’s Club during one of their luncheons. After we played, they asked us to join them for lunch. We were treated to the largest porterhouse steaks that either of us had ever eaten. In fact, I’ve never had a steak since then that has tasted as great as that one did!

I haven't thought about the gasp from the audience in a long time. It really was amazing how impressed people were, almost like they were caught off-guard.

I went through boot camp a few years after my stint in the RBB and found boot camp to be be a lot easier to contend with. People look at me like I'm crazy to say my high shool band was as tough as that.

Mr Kunkel always stressed discipline with us. When seated in the stands at a football game we were not allowed to leave our seats. I’m sure we got a break after we marched at half time, but that was all. I remember one game when Mr. Kunkel broke his own rule. It was a game at Navasota (might even have been a Jr. High game, I’m not sure). The stadium light just above our section suddenly exploded, sending sparks flying. That’s the fastest any of us ever saw Mr. Kunkel move as he cleared the handrail in front of our section!

Because of my love for music, I have to say that this was the best class of the day for 7 years of school. I was in the beginning band in 51-52 when I was in the 6th grade. After that, I was a high school band member until I graduated. Mr. Bryan was a great teacher and inspired many students, some to go on and become band directors themselves. Mr. John Kunkel became director when I began my junior year and it was really a BIG change. His style was completely different and as many of you know ,made the band a super star. Hope many of my era friends are able to attend the reunion. This is a wonderful idea. Thanks!

Okay Freddie Jo, you're talking some serious history here. And I have to admit that Mr. Bryan's name is a new one for me. I for one appreciate the history lesson and want to hear more.

There's another Haltom posting on the site, Robert, class of 64, a year after I was born and the summer before the birth of my brother Kevin, the class of 82s tuba-dooby-doo. There are large, long-lasting family traditions going on in the RBB, my own spanning from 67 through 91. And frankly, that's just where I lost track.

So let's here it from the dynasties. Extra point for memories from the largest, longest lasting band family. Bonus prizes for the earliest years, beginning band included. Freddie Joe you may already have won with 1951! Do I hear 50? 50 any one?

So many memories come to mind when I think of the RBB. Probably the most important ones are HARD WORK, a shared sense of accomplishment that was tangible, and PRIDE that there was nothing wrong with having because we EARNED it - the old fashioned way - through hard work. I have always been so proud of our accomplishments and of the discipline that was instilled in me as a result of that experience.

Okay - enough of the serious stuff - on to the funny - I remember my junior/senior year when I switched from flute to tenor sax and Mr. Blacksher telling me I sounded like a tugboat lost in the fog. Heck I was just having a great time being able to play to my heart's content after having been in a section with too many woodwinds.

One more sax memory - senior year - when we - (please forgive me if I get the names wrong, but it has been 30 years OH GOD I'M GETTING OLD) played in a quartet at solo & ensemble contest (Vickie Keng, Nancy McKellar, Linda Suneson & me) - at practice we always became bored, so we switched horns and played someone else's part. Believe it or not we still got a "1" and a blue ribbon!!!

I look forward too seeing all of you - if I can lose 75 pounds in 2 months!!!

If you are talking about the same Tommie Thomas (that played the flute)who I knew, then she was my class, 1961. She was my first date in the 6th grade at my folk's "walk-in movie". We held hands. I had a lot of trouble doing that(holding hands) and eating popcorn and drinking my coke at the same time.

I was lucky enough to see Tommy for the last time when I attended our 25th class reunion(1986)at the Cleveland Country Club(now defunct). Tommy won the prize for the one that had changed the least. Tommie was a wonderful Lady and Classmate and we will all miss her much.
p.s. At the reunion, she still remembered and laughed heartedly about the day Jerry Brown and I got our butts paddled for sticking a jockey strap in her locker and hanging around til she opened it. She didnt have to scream that loud and get us caught!!

They were the wonderful reasons for getting my out of those corny piano lessons my mom made me take in grade school.(If she wanted piano, then she shoulda taken the lessons) Mr. Bryan loved a good marching band also. His favorite guy was John Phillips Sousa and when the movie of Sousa's life came out in about 1953, "THE STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER", he never missed a night watching it at our Texas Theater downtown Cleveland. For family reasons, his family had to relocate in Ganado, Tx. where he became their band director. I stayed in touch until son Jerry and got to college. I dont know if he is still with us or not but I still remember the multi-band summer fests he helped put together. At break time all the band directors would have a Jazz Jam Session out on the porch of the old band hall behind the downtown junior high. That was real jazz those guys were playing..."Fun Jazz".

When Mr. Bryan and son, Jerry and family all left for Ganado, Tx., I was devistated. I knew there could never be a better band director to ever replace "John Phillips Sousa" Bryan. Then in steps this 23yr old kid fresh out of Teacher's College to take over.--John Kunkle--Boy was I wrong!! Which brings us to this pool game story.

I dont know the year but I think the band was headed for Austin to participate in either a parade or participate in a multi-high school band halftime performance at a U of T college football game.
Well, about halfway there, the busses stopped for lunch at some sleepy town along the way(might have been Brenham). As we are pulling up to a local Dairy Queen for quick burgers(cause we were running late), Jerry Ford, Jerry Brown, I spot a local pool hall. We opted for the pool game instead of the burgers. Long story/short, We lost track of time with that good pool game. We looked out the front window to see the busses slowly passing, looking for us. We went tearing outta there and at the same time "Unca Kunk" or "Picolo Pete"(his college nickname)came tearing off the lead bus.He lined us up in front of the lead bus in front of God and everybody beat our butts with the best thing he had available--a newspaper. Ever been spanked with a newspaper? I don't hurt. It was a little embarassing that we couldn't stop laughing as we climbed onto the bus.---I've got one more story coming up, then that's it.(you'll never read these things anyway at the reunion)(you might enjoy them at the next planning meeting though):)

This is a little pearl for those of you still riding those band busses to away football games, parades, and competitions with your best, not-so-best, or just girlfriends. Never, I repeat, NEVER allow your significant other (after boarding the bus for the long late night trip back home)to impose on your comfort by falling asleep in your lap. Especially if you have just eaten 2 bean burritos just after half-time. Those things(burritos)make noxious gas that is lighter than air and floats upward. You cannot hide it once it is out(and guess who gets it first). I know. I lost a favorite band bus girl that way.:)

End of stories---see u guys at the reunion. Rob

I remember one night after marching practice, some of us got brave (teenager word for stupid)and wrapped Mr. Blacksher's house. I was still wearing my drum major whistle (which I still have to this day) and, as we were leaving, my boyfriend grabbed my whistle and blew as loud as he could letting Mr. Blacksher know exactly who was responsible. I was scared to go to school the next day but Mr. Blacksher never said a word. He was the first "cool" adult I had ever known. I remember a phrase that Mr. Blacksher liked to say..."Of all the drum majors I've ever seen, you're definitely one of them". Never quite understood what that meant but it was cool because he said it. He's just simply the best ever in my book!

What a pleasure when Robbie McClain called with the info about the reunion.I am so sorry that I will not be able to be there due to being on a fall foliage trip to New England area (already paid for and can't change. )Having been a band director myself for 12 years ('65-'77) I have stories from student and director perspectives! Anyway, one day back in the drum section,('60 or '61) Jerry Ford and I set fire to the nylon shirt of Jack Meyers'(he wore it out and not tucked in) by trying to give him a "hot seat" with Ford's lighter (he occasionally smocked). We made Jack stand up all the time and count all the measures rest (concert season) since he was an under classman to us!. The percussion section had LOTS of measures rest back then. Jack's shirt was one of the NEW nylon type material, and it just started dissolving very quickly from the bottom up with fire! Jack starts dancing around and we just tackled him to "snuff him out", knocking over drums, stands, etc.Big time chaos!!! Mr. Kunkel obviously got us up in front of the band for a good paddling! Lots of other stories also, but time and space won't allow. We also had some VERY POWERFUL drum sections for those few years. Lets hear from other band members' stories etc, "58-'61. My address is :

By the way, I still have Sinfonia fanfare memorized! No lie. I can play Killian cold also.
I love band. When I was a Sophomore, my friend and section member decided the three top bass clarinets needed to decorate our horns with lights! Yes, we did, and the lights meandered up into my keys renedering the horn useless for 2/3 of the worlds shortest parade route.

At UIL contest when I was a soph or junior, after Sinfonia Fanfare, I ordered my bass clarinet so forcefully I actually lost my mouthpiece. My shoulder bore the bruise for a week.
Of course, band has stuck with me for years, and I am proud to say I am starting my first band director job in Brownsboro, TX. And, yes, we're military!!!!!!!!

I also remember Jack Myers (RBB 1963)but since I was not a upperclassman drummer, I never picked on him. He was a good drummer. Good enough to make drummer in Aggie Band. I watched him over the years at the football games as drummer and then when he was a proud Aggie Senior with his senior uniform and boots. Jack as senior got to step up with the elite "Front Row" and blow the long bugles at the beginning of every ceremony which started with the Aggie War Hymn. He looked great. I know that he has passed away in the last 2 years and we will miss him in the ranks of the RBB reunion. I know that Jerry Brown didnt know that Jack was gone when he wrote his story.
On a lighter note, I do remember his older sister, Nancy Myers(when I was in 1955 beginner band) standing out at the old football field playing a solo trumpet to Winter Wonderland By Night with the stadium lites out. That was a beautiful trumpet sound from Col. Bryan's band. later, Rob

First of all, I am so happy that Leon Wells forwarded his daughters RBB new letter to me. I have just been scrolling and reading (many fond memories came to mind) I started playing clarinet in 1953 (6th grade) under Mr. Bryan and then later went to oboe (for concert season) and finally Bari-sax under Mr. Kunkle. We were fortunate to have studied and learned under both men. Altho they were from two different eras, their ultimate goal was the same. I remember when Mr. Kunkle introduced our twin drum majors and majorette front line. Wow, our district hadn't seen anything like that before. I could go on and on but I'll close and just say "Howdy exes and OLD friends" Hope to see you in Sept.

Great stories and memories from my former ( and missed )brother-in-law, Robbie McClain ! Thanks, Rob ! :)
The most vivid and wonderful memories that I have of highschool are those of band. Mr. Kunkle made more of an impression on me than any of my other teachers in highschool..... (I still cringe when I see an eraser). God knows I needed lots of discipline and he taught me that. He demanded things of us that we didn't know we had in us but he knew and brought out our best. Some of my fondest memories are the bus rides back from contest when we would have giant # 1 signs on the side of the bus. Kunkle wouldn't accept any less and we worked so hard to make it happen for him and for ourselves....WHAT A FEELING !!! Thanks, Mr. K.
Can't wait till September....... and I apologize to the person who marched in front of me ( I'm old, can't remember) for all the bruises I inflicted on your backside with my bass clarinet when missing a turn or not stopping soon enough....

I was very saddened to learn of Jack Meyers' death. Here's a fun story of how he got me back for the 'hot seat " prank! Several years later, I was a Jr. or Sr. at Sam Houston, and the Aggie Band hosted a percussion symposium for several university music depts. The drummers(percussionists) from Sam Houston, SFA,Brennam Jr. College, and I think TCU, and some others, were at A&M for a 2 day clinic, etc.I saw and spent some time there with Jack, not knowing till then that he was there. We laughed again about the stuff in high school! During the noon break the 2nd day, Jack and some of the Aggie drummers hid ALL the equipment of the Sam Houston drummers, so when we started for the afternoon, we couldn't find any thing, and were in a panic! After about 10-15 minutes, Jack and some of the other Aggie drummers took us to where they had hid it all in a nearby locked room! We all had a good laugh about that and we all moved it back for the afternoon and had a good time at the drum clinic. He said that was "pay back" for the "hot seat" prank! That was the last time I saw Jack, but thought of him often over the years. Drummers in ALL bands (then and now) are always "cooking up something"! Must go with the personality style, but ask any drummer, and they will probably all agree. The CHS drum section could never have been what it was without Jack. I still see Pete Kunkel many times a year and he always says that those were the best snare drum sections he ever had anywhere. Does anyone know of Johnny Stanford? He was in that section also, and a brother of Kaye Johnson that I can't remember the first name, and another guy named Frank _______?

The last I heard, Don Pontoja was a band director in Deer Park or Channelview. Tom Contine' did have a private school somewhere in Louisiana. Maybe Lumpy was working as an electrician or had an electrical company in Houston? I think Tom Overton has visited with Pontoja and Lumpy in the last few years.

Kay - You're correct. Trying to get Ray in a tuba case now would definitely be a pay-per-view event. I hope your schedule gets rearranged so you (and Bob) can make the reunion. Thank you for confirming what you weren't wearing under your uniform...makes me sad I dropped out of the Boy Scouts.

Subject: PRIDE

I graduated from Cleveland in 1995, went to SFA and came back home to be the assistant band director for the RBB.
I remember the feelings of PRIDE as a student, it is a feeling I have never forgotten. However, the feeling of PRIDE as a director was overwhelming during the first football game, while I was standing on the track with Mr.Kelly ,watching the band make its way to the side line to close the drill with Sinfonians. With goose bumps and tears in my eyes I remeber saying to Mr.Kelly " I would trade places with anyone of those kids in a minute, just to march one more time".
But, I can honestly say I would not trade anything for the time I have had as a student and director of RBB.
Every so often I have the oppurtunity to stand in front of the band before U.I.L marching contest and give them a "Pride talk".
Thanks to all of those organizing the reunion. I am looking forward to seeing everyone.

I've been reading all these posts and just realized that only one person from 1967 has posted. Hi Ada! So, where is everyone that graduated in 1967?

And going down memory lane, does anyone remember when my skirt fell off while twirling on stage during a Friday pep rally? I think it was 1965 and I was a sophmore. I had Coach Speaker the first class after lunch and he asked what I had planned for the next week. I was so embarrassed.

And refresh my memory twilers, wasn't that the first year we played Apache? What a great song that was and gave us so much team spirit.

Are they still playing Apache these days? I hope so.

Remember striking up Apache as we left the Gymnasium after pep rally? We would play it as we made our way back to the band hall. We played as loud as we could, maybe not musically correct, but LOUD! It would echo through the commons area and down all the halls. It got everyone fired up.

The RBB meant alot to me. I, like others here, had a family tradition of being in the band. My brothers, Tony and Richard, had the opportunity to participate under the direction of Mr. Kunkel. Growing up there was a sort of legend/mystique about the reputation of the RBB. That tradition of wowwing the crowd with how we executed our performance. I'll never forget stepping on the field the first time at UIL, or our celebrations when the announcers read the ratings...1...1...1!

Look forward to seeing everyone in September.

Ah yes, the Cotton Bowl. What was his name Ada? Alan? hehe. I remember Mr. Kunkle knocking on our door saying...The Buses are Loading...and Peggy and I were still in bed. Boy did we move fast. And remember how we hung out of the windows of the hotel and shouted to people (guys) on the street. We told them our room number and they tried to come up. But my Mother and Billie Carpentier and a few others sat in the hall and stopped them as they appeared. I remember one of the football players rolling right into my chair during the game. Remember the band sat on the side of the field? The party that night was great. It was fun meeting all the kids in the other bands. I remember how cold it was walking back to the bus. Didn't we have snow flurries during the game or when we were practicing?

Well Ada, it looks like you and I are the only two from our class aware of this site. We need to get the word out.

Hello friends! It's obvious we all have wonderful memories of band and what it meant to each of us. However, I have to say that no matter what is said, I insist that the bragging rights of the RBB are reserved for the early 60's. Our magnificent band was the BEST! The members, especially our drummers, could move the world. One memory: The Battle of Flowers Parade in San Antonio, heat of 100 degrees, lining up at noon, finally marching at 4:00 until after 6:00, blisters, aching muscles and a pride beyond belief. Somehow those drums kept us moving. Of course, Mr. Kunkel ranked next to God, and we were fortunate to learn from his great leadership. Long live the RBB!
Thanks to the planners who are making this reunion happen. We are looking forward to a great time!

I was the luckiest RBB member- I had forgotten my band shoes (Mr. Kunkel was not happy)and I got to march in my white tennis shoes which were much more comfortable. When we got to the reviewing stand near the end and we did an eyes right, the entire reviewing stand stood up and gave us a standing ovation! It made it all worthwhile. What a great experience.

Subject: Cotton Bowl Parade

Another Cotton Bowl memory, especially for the twirlers. For some reason, the twirlers had to wear the long pants for the half time performance, so early in the year new pants were ordered for each twirler. We got measured for them, and everything. And, as we were all together at the time, there was a little competition to make sure all noticed that we each had a slim waistline. So, there may have been a little sucking in & tightening of the tape measure to make sure it read 22". (Mine never did, Lord knows, but I'm sure Ella's did!) Well, we were allowed to wear the shorts for the parade, but had to change into the long pants before we entered the Cotton Bowl. We were really pressed for time & had to change in the middle of a Denny's (or some such) restaurant. The bathrooms must have been full because we had to do this in front of God and Everybody. So, we ended up putting the long pants on OVER the shorts. You may all recall how thick those wool uniforms were! Imagine trying to zip up those pants over those thick shorts (which were NOT made to fit, but were hand-me-downs, and may have been too big & bulky to begin with!) Anyway, I remember it was a miracle that those zippers didn't break!!!

Subject: The Best Years

Ginny, when we started planning this reunion, I would have said the same thing, believe me, because I can’t imagine anyone having a finer time than we did in the 1960s. And, of course, I just assumed that the kids of the last few decades were a totally undisciplined lot. (After all, what band director today could paddle a student without fear of a law suit?) But, you know, after reading all the email on this website, I’ve totally changed my mind. I have come to believe that the legacy of the Royal Braves Band has truly been passed down in tact. They must have been a disciplined bunch of kids to have maintained the string of First Divisions started in the 60s (50s?). And, listen to them! The memories are the same as ours! If you look, you’ll see these common threads running through all of our communications on this website: the “torture” by upper classmen (Rob, are you listening?); the Texas heat that brought you to your knees or the cold that stiffened the fingers so you could barely play your instrument or move the baton through your fingers; the blood, sweat and tears at practice; the chills for “Fanfare” or “Rifle Regiment” or “Apache”; the driving drum cadence (which I can still tap out on a table top, even though I didn’t play the drums): and finally the joy when the crowds gave us that standing ovation, or when that First Division was announced. Our spouses, our children-- they don’t understand all the fuss about this reunion. How can they? But these young people do. They speak with our voices when they speak of the pride and love of the band. These were the best years of our lives. Heck, in this one small Texas town, this WAS our life! Email is truly an equalizer, don’t you think? Put your hand over the year of graduation, and you can’t tell us apart. You can’t see wrinkles and gray hair (or lack there of). You can’t tell if the writers are newly graduated and still so achingly young that you want to reach out brush the hair out of their eyes. We’re all members of the RBB, and, like a string of pearls, we stretch in an unbroken line over these 55 long years. And, least we forget, the clasps at either end of this string are our band directors, past and present. And, if we were pearls, then they were diamonds! And they held that string that kept us together. So, yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause. Oops…wrong speech. But you get the idea!

Hi everybody, especially my 67 band friends. My big sister Terese said I needed to send an e-mail. It’s so good to hear from all the RBB members who have written. I recognize so many of the names, both past and present. My earliest memories of the band were from my first year in the 8th grade with Mr. Kunkel. I had received a trombone from my grandmother (it was supposed to be a saxophone) a hand-me-down. The slide was so bad that during practice, Mr. Kunkel stopped the band and asked me why I wasn’t keeping up with the beat.
He asked me to come up front and he looked at the trombone and realized the slide would hardly move. He held onto the horn and I grabbed the slide and we pulled and it still wouldn’t come off and everybody laughed so loud. That was my introduction to the band. Some of my idols were from the class of 64 when I was a freshman. I remember Byron Thornton playing St. Louis Blues in the stands as Mr. Kunkel directed the band. I actually took trombone lessons from Byron. I remember he would turn on the radio and just play along. He had a real true ear for music. I remember Robert Haltom playing the tuba. Robert is the only person I knew who could double and triple tongue and on the tuba, that was amazing. I also remember Barry Pennington playing the trumpet and hitting those high notes in Rifle Regiment. There were so many good players from that year. Ada and Bobby, I also remember the Cotton Bowl. It was so cold I didn’t know how we were going to play. I remember being so impressed with the Texas Longhorn band. If my memory serves me right it was Texas and Navy that year in the Cotton Bowl. There are so many wonderful memories being a RBB member! I feel so lucky being a student of Mr. Kunkel and Mr. Happe. I’m glad to see the band has continued the military marching style. I’m looking so forward to seeing the band perform Friday night. What a great time this reunion will be!

Hello fellow classmates. One of many memories as a RBB member was my freshman year. I was third chair french horn out of 4. WE were practicing I think Greensleeves for concert contest. The french horn opened with a solo note which I believe was a high E. The first and second chair could not hit the note but wouldn't you know it I did so Mr Kunkel said I was the one. The note was to be played for 8 counts butI was so nervous I only made 4 counts. there was dead silence. Mr. Kunkel glared at me as only he could. I was so embarassed which was many times and being yelled at on the field. But he was the best director anyone could ever have. I have enjoyed reading all the memories and I am looking forward to seeing everyone.

Guys,
I'm enjoying all the stores about the band. It's bringing back lots of memories. I remember the high note from the French Horn for the beginning of Greensleeves (one of the pieces I still love to hear). Marsha's retelling of that was great.

My own stories is a vivid memory of my missing a countermarch turn during a presentation in (I think) Silsbee, TX, and I went marching off into oblivion while the rest of the band went the other way. Ah, yes, quite an eye opener that was.. and that feeling of: "Oh, s***, where am I?" and "Where is the band now?" ... and trying to get back into formation. Yikes.... My toenails still curl just thinking about that one. I thought Mr. Kunkel was going to kill me but he didn't (although there was "the look".)

What a blast! We lived through these things and were stronger because of it.

Subject: Band Dreams & Stuff

I had band dreams for years!!! Mostly that we're at contest and I don't have my uniform, or that I'm on the field with no clothes on....and I wake up in such a panic and am SO GLAD that it was a dream!!!

Rochelle, I, too, have fond memories of Mr. Blacksher's hair 'swishing' to the beat. Remember playing Mission Impossible at the Spring concert and everyone in the audience went wild?

My whole goal from the time I was a little girl was to be Drum Major like my big sister, Rita (who taught me everything I knew about a baton "idiot stick"). It meant the world to me at that time in my life and I would hold my head up so high at marching contest that that big, furry hat would practically fall off the back of my head. Also, it was cool when we were marching into a stadium that we were visiting and all of us would NOT look at the passersby and they would try everything to make us laugh or SOMETHING and we would defiantly keep our eyes focused straight ahead. They were amazed, but see, they'd never had a Senior get in their face and say, "What are you looking at, Kathy Moron???"

Wow! The discipline, the pride, the unity in the RBB have been ever present in my 'adult' life (I won't grow up!) And my co-drum majors were the best and to this day I love you guys with all my heart - Connie Rice Mann and Donna Packer Campbell! And we had the most beautifulest twirling line - we did some serious twirling! Loved it!

I know that Blacksher and Caston were so glad when I traded in my Bflat Clarinet for the Contrabass clarinet - the oompa's were so much easier to memorize!!! I was addicted to the "idiot stick."

Lord, I've written a book, but there's not enough words to say what RBB has meant to me. I wanted to cry my eyes out the last time I watched the RBB march and at the end, they came to the sidelines and played the fanfare - the same fanfare that was ours. I tear up to think about it. KEEP THE TRADITION ALIVE!!! Also, I hear that Apache has been scalped and is slow and boring these days with no bold drumbeat.....WHAT???? Get it going youngsters, or us old folks will be all over ya'll!

All ex-twirlers - LET'S DO APACHE AT THE REUNION!!! I HAVE THE MUSIC ON AN OLD CASSETTE THAT WE USED TO PRACTICE TO!!! :) WHO'S UP FOR THE CHALLENGE???

Thanks, my little brown-eyed Susan for putting this all together! You are so special to me!

I just sent an email to Beth who is handling the marching dvds, telling her that I just talked to Mr.Kunkel re.the tapes. He said that there were no marching contest tapes made while he was there. End of Story so you wont need to bug Beth(who is overwelmed or Susan or Regina). Those of us from '61 and '62 will have to wait for Ginny Bailes Anglin to bring a family converted black and white soundless vcr(which she dubbed early '60s rock and roll music to)tape. Rob

Wow! Your story is so relatable for me. I too was drum major of the RBB '64-'65 and '65-'66. Being drum major obviously meant as much to you as it did to me. I could sense the pride you feel even after all the years have passed. I think it would be fun to have you and some of the twirlers of your era perform "Apache". There are lots of good memories linked to that song. Also, I have a drum major hat and will bring it to the reunion. Mr. Charles Barker (coach to us) rescued it from the trash in the mid 90's. He knew I would not want it to be destroyed. I am so glad that he found and saved it!! I look forward to meeting you and others who had the privilege of leading the RBB. Yes, I feel that each year has successfully carried on the rich and lasting traditions from so long ago when the band was young. Thanks to all who proudly continue the legacy!!

Any and all past and present high school twirlers please bring your batons to the reunion. We will be reteaching Apache starting @ 9:30am on the day of the reunion. We will have a few run throughs and will perform for everyone at some point that day. If you do not want to twirl it is ok but please bring batons for those who want to participate. Thank you for your cooperation

Is there a TV/VCR combo available at the school for us to use to show the 661-62 band films? Sure would be nice not to have to bring one!

Subject: Thrills

First, let me say how much I've enjoyed reading about all the adventures different classes have had. The first thrill that comes to mind (yeah, I still got one) is marching in the Houston Fat Stock Show Parade. There I was, this 12 year old marching in a band that was struting down the streets of downtown Houston. Our beautiful, white plumes waving in the wind. The crowd was evidently pleased, because they applauded as we marched along. Donald Black was twirling his drum sticks high over his head as he kept the beat on the bass drum. Never mind the blisters that we got on our feet after the five mile march, we knew we were going to get to see our favorite "cowboy" heroes at the rodeo. It certainly wasn't beneath me to scramble down to the arena fence and climb it so that I could shake hands with the likes of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, or The Cisco Kid and Poncho, or The Range Rider(Jock Mahoney, Sally Field's Dad), or Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett. This was a big event in our lives each year. Another time, we boarded charter buses(something new to all of us back then), and went to the Texas State Fair to play a concert. That night, at the Cotton Bowl, we saw and heard Rosemary Cloony (you know, George's aunt). She was at the height of her career then. The summer band camps were wonderful. Kids from all over Texas came to stay in private homes that the townspeople opened up to them and have a week of intense musical training by some of the best musicians known. What a wonderful time to play with so many talented people. Can't wait to see some of my friends!

I ask in memory of a deceased RBB member, to give to the MDA Telethon. My mom Tommie Thomas Class of 61 passed away Feb. 2, 1990 from Limb Girdle MD. If it wasn't for MDA she would have been without alot of equipment. I ask you to give even if it is just $5.00. It will be used for a very worthy cause.

Thank You,

Hello everyone!
I promised Beth that I would scan in some photos from yearbooks and other sources and send to her. After searching...and searching...I can only find the 1980 and 1982 yearbooks. Sheila (Walker) from my class has kindly forwarded pictures from 1983, too.

So, if you have the 1981 yearbooks or other photos to share, please send them in to Beth. We'll all enjoy seeing them!

Hey Guys,
I dont have a computer but I am enjoying reading and scrolling down to the next message of the RBB past experiences on Rob McClain's computer. I cant think of any better story than Rob and John Burns told about playing pool in Navasota and having Mr. Kunkel paddle us with Mr. Hardy's leather belt.
Looking forward to reuniting with all the RBB'ers at homecoming and reunion. Jerry

P.S.hello to Ginney, Sheryl, Lorraine, and all you beautiful sweet young things that I knew of yesteryear.

Subject: Cool school stools

Does anyone out there remember the year we sold those stools as a fund raiser. If I remember correctly, we raised the money to go to Memphis (??) and then the school board would not let us take the trip. I seem to remember the twirlers doing a skit about the stools at a pep rally to the tune of "Drinking Rum and Cocacola".

From: Lorraine Herrod Devillier Class of 1965 on Wed Sep 7 11:29:14 PDT 2005

Subject: Cool School Stools

WOW, that is a memory long forgotten. I remember there was a contest to see who could sell the most. I remember I came in 2nd and won a cotton jacket with the band logo on it. I think Judy Burns beat me by 2.
We were to go to the Cotton Festival in Memphis and when the school board said no, we used the money we had raised to have a grand band banquet that year. Mr. Kunkel offered to quit because he thought he had let us down.

Thank God that Mr. K did not leave us over something so small. What a positive influence he was on so many of our lives. Those memories of the RBB are priceless!!! After we didn't go to the Cotton Festival, we DID get to march at the Cotton BOWL 1964. I think that USNA played and Roger Staubach was their quarterback then.

Well, yeah.. the part about NOT going to Memphis was not so "cool". Wow, I could not believe the emotions this whole topic brings up. I still remember the sounds as well of the baton clanging on the music stand. Also, remember the times Mr. Kunkel would hit the baton so hard on the stand that it would break?

And yet we felt something very special, didn't we? A great sense of a part of something much larger and something of lasting value.

Guys, the band and Mr. Kunkel were a real blessing to me.

Subject: Terry - What about the infamous I.O.S.T.????

You guys are great! (Thank you, sweet Susan for all that you've done!) It has been FUNderful reading all these posts! Personally, I've had the pleasure of having TWO children follow in my RBB footsteps - Sean (2002) and Sarah, currently a Sophomore. Sarah never used to understand why I'd cry at the football games/Contests/Spring Concerts every year when Sean was in the band...NOW she's getting it!

My favorite memories are of the unconscionable pranks that the I.O.S.T. (and their Honorary members) would pull on Mr. Jordan the first year he arrived. We were still VERY much mourning the loss of Mr. Blacksher as Band Director, so (as kids do) we took it out on his replacement (as if he could EVER be replaced!) Several of the key memories were the recurring disappearance of Mr. Jordan's license plates for his Yellow Z, breakfast that we served to he and his lovely wife after we forced our way into their apartment one morning, and the "collection can" that we passed around the school to the unsuspecting students, who generously "donated" to our cause. The cause ended up being a FULL PAGE ad in the Pineburr for the I.O.S.T.! AW, those were the days!

A big HUG goes out to all my former friends from RBB! Miss you guys sOOOOOOOOOOO much!

Can't wait to see everyone at the reunion!
(That's when I'll make my confession to Mr. Blacksher about the antics that "Lunchie" pulled me into!)

Subject: Mr Holland's Opus

I finally rented the movie recommended by Robbie McClain!! "Mr Holland's Opus" will certainly get you ready for our RBB reunion in a few weeks. If you watch it, just make sure to have lots of kleenex handy. The movie brings back so many memories....I pictured Pete Kunkel in a lot of the scenes. The speech given by the governor at the end certainly applies to my hero, Mr. K.!!! Several folks have stated that Mr. K. was their most memorable teacher at CHS. I can honestly say that Mr. Kunkel had a profound influence on my life. He touched so many lives while he was the much beloved director of the RBB!! I believe that each of us who were privileged to experience his leadership, are certainly a richer and better person for having known him.
